Absolutely, that crossed my mind as I read that quote too. It made me think of the BTK case, where his wife and children were caught completely unaware after his arrest and unable to comprehend what he had done. Incidentally, Stephen King wrote a great short story (A Good Marriage, I think?) on this theme from a killer's wife's point of view, which I always thought was very good and also based on BTK, I think.
