An arrest has been made in a cold case murder dating back to 2001 in which a young mother-to-be was brutally killed in her army barracks in Germany, it has been revealed.

Amanda Gonzales grew up in Texas and was renowned for her caring nature in high school, which saw her always willing to stick up for her classmates when they needed her.

It was something of a surprise in 2000 when the teenager told her family she was joining the US Army, but Amanda had a plan: she would serve for a while, then use her GI Bill to put herself through college with the ultimate ambition of becoming a children’s physical therapist.

In 2001, Amanda was stationed at a base in Germany where she was tasked to work as a cook. There, she continued to strengthen her reputation as champion of the underdog — her nickname in the military became ‘firecracker’ because she always stepped in if she saw someone being treated poorly.
