Authorities in Pennsylvania have announced they have solved their oldest cold case murder using a combination of new DNA techniques and dogged police work.

Lindy Sue Beichler was just 19 when she was murdered in her own apartment a few weeks before Christmas in 1975, and investigators never quite gave up hope of finding out who committed this most vicious of crimes.

A savage murder

Lindy had been married to her husband Phil for just a few months, and the couple were looking forward to moving to a new and bigger apartment as soon as they could.

In the meantime, Lindy was working at a local florist and had gained a great reputation for her eye for detail, particularly with customers in the run-up to the festive season. She had called at the grocery store after work on the evening of December 5th and returned home as usual.

However, just over an hour later, her aunt and uncle called by to visit and stumbled upon a scene of true horror. Lindy lay sprawled on her back in a pool of blood, a butcher’s knife from her own kitchen protruding from her chest…
