It’s a crime that has been gripping the US state of Oregon: a romantic suspense author stands accused of writing all about how to kill someone — and then acting on her own advice. In this case, the writer is a little-known novelist called Nancy Crampton-Brophy, and the deceased is her husband, 63-year-old chef Daniel Brophy.

But did she do it, or did someone else realise they might have the opportunity to commit the perfect murder and frame her? Let’s take a closer look.

The day of the murder

It was June 2nd 2018, and students at the Oregon Culinary Institute had arrived bright and early to take part in a restaurant simulation exercise. Their teacher was a popular instructor called Daniel Brophy, who would arrive before them to prep the room.

However, the horrified youngsters entered the building to find Daniel sprawled on the classroom floor, having been fatally shot once in the back and once in the chest.
