Double Murder in Paradise? How Two Cold Cases in Hawaii May Be Linked
Jubilee Lum was found in a dumpster, but another young woman discovered in a field could also have been murdered.
Two young women dead in Hawaii; two unexplained mysteries hanging over Oahu since before the dawn of the new millennium. But are the two linked — and have investigators really done enough to find out since 1999?
Jubilee Lum
Jubilee ‘Maile’ Lum was 21 in 1999 and one of six much-loved siblings in her big family. However, her late teens had brought rebellion and, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, she had started hanging out with a rougher crowd.
The young woman became embroiled in the world of drugs and, much to her family’s dismay, sex work. Jubilee had already been pulled up by the police on a number of occasions for solicitation in the seedy underbelly of Chinatown.
But by the summer of 1999, it looked as though Jubilee might be ready to leave all that behind. She had recently enrolled back in school to get her GED and she had become engaged to a young man she had known since childhood. Perhaps, her loved ones hoped, Jubilee could turn a corner and do what she really wanted to do.
