He was investigated and completely cleared, according to one of the contemporary reports I read. Apparently he eventually remarried but the second wife died young too, of cancer. Poor guy. You're right though - often it turns out to be the husband in this kind of case. Probably I should have mentioned that in the original write-up for clarity! As a side note, it's quite alarming how many unsolved murders there are in the same general area of Texas - I'm convinced some at least are linked. I really hope it can be proven one day.
