Police in Middlesex County, Massachusetts have announced that a breakthrough has been made in the case of Judith Ann Chartier, a 17-year-old girl who had been missing for almost 40 years.

You can read the full details of the case and some of the theories about what might have happened to her here:

Now, the authorities have announced that the 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger that was driven by Judy when she vanished on June 5th 1982 has been located in the Concord River.

Furthermore, when a police dive team was sent down to examine the parts of the vehicle, human remains were discovered that have since been linked to Judy via dental records, NBC News reports.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said the break in the case came about as a result of new sonar technology that had not been available in the 1980s when Judy disappeared.
