Man Charged With 1966 Child Murder That Haunted Massachusetts

A 73-year-old sex offender is accused of murdering ten-year-old Betty Lou Zukowski in one of the state’s oldest cold cases.

Prosecutors in Massachusetts have announced they have arrested a man in connection with a 1966 child murder.

Betty Lou Zukowski was just ten and known for her free-spirited nature when she left her home in Chicopee on the evening of May 26th 1966. She had answered a phone call and told her parents it was from a girl she knew asking her to go out.

However, when Betty Lou failed to return hours later, Stanley and Mildred Zukowski went to the Chicopee Police Department to report her missing.

A widespread search swiftly began and police officers started to ask questions about Betty Lou’s last known movements. It emerged that the female friend she was supposed to have taken the phone call from was fictitious.

Even more worryingly, Betty Lou’s friends told investigators the youngster had been spending time with a teenage boy lately whom she referred to as ‘Ralph’. There turned out to be no Ralph either, although the friends were able to provide enough details about him to create a sketch.
