Investigators in Michigan say they are reopening a cold case murder more than 30 years after it occurred in the hope of finally getting justice for the victim’s family.

Sheriff Doug Chapman and investigator Mark Pendergraff from the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office held a news conference this week (July 2023) to say the killing of Matthew Leach will be revisited with fresh eyes to assess all the available evidence and appeal for new information.

A fateful meeting

Matthew had been living in Flint in 1992 and was last seen at the Colonia Coney Island Restaurant on Corunna Road some time between 10:00 and 11:00 PM on July 24th.

He had arranged to meet with an ex-girlfriend and his father Herb Leach Senior told MLive-The Flint Journal there didn’t seem to be anything wrong.

“He’d been working, he had money in his pocket, he said, ‘Dad, I’m going out tonight’. I said, ‘Well, behave yourself. I’ll see you tomorrow’,” Herb recalled.
