Police Ask For Help Solving 1989 Cold Case Murder in Connecticut

Police in Connecticut have asked for the public’s help as they revisit a cold murder case that rocked a local community when it occurred back in 1989.

Joan Wertkin, 38, was a married mother-of-two living in the town of Westport that May 24th when, according to her husband, she went out in her white BMW to go grocery shopping at a nearby plaza.

She had been gone several hours when firefighters were called to a blaze behind the shops at the plaza at around 11:00 PM. When first responders were able to get the fire under control, they discovered the body of Joan Wertkin close to the boundary between the stores and some woods. It was reported that she had been strangled to death with a rope or cord before being set alight.

Meanwhile, Joan’s husband was contacting Westport Police to report his wife missing.

Few details about the murder have been released in the years since it occurred, but detectives did say that Joan’s BMW was parked in front of the shopping plaza when her body was discovered. However, a press release states that investigators “do not believe she drove herself to that…
