Authorities in Illinois have announced that they have given a murder victim back his name after nearly 43 years thanks to advanced forensic testing.

The lengthy cold case began in July 1980, when workers digging part of the Chicago Greater Area Sanitary and Shipping Canal unearthed a large wooden crate that had been nailed shut.

They didn’t think much of it and dumped the box alongside the other debris that had been excavated, causing it to break open. However, when another worker went to take a closer look to see if he could salvage any wood, he made a shocking discovery.

Inside the crate was the decomposing body of a man. An autopsy revealed he had been shot in the abdomen with a shotgun and then multiple times with a handgun, suggesting he had been murdered by more than one assailant.

Estimates deemed that he was aged between 25 and 35 and had been in the box somewhere between four days and two weeks. He had blondish hair and wore dark blue work pants, a green T-shirt with a pocket, wool socks and a single house slipper.
